Akanthomyces aculeatus Lebert Z. in Wiss. Zool. 9: 449 (1858)

    Description:

    unknown

    References:

Specimens were found on the underside of mostly dicotyledonous leaves of forest plants. Hosts are adult moths (Lepidoptera). White to cream mycelia covering the host extending to the plant leaf surface, almost pinning them to the substratum. A long single synnema, sometimes several, ca. 0.5-1 cm arises at the head of moth. Synnemata arising from various parts of the insect, very variable in length, 1-5 mm long, 0.1-0.5 mm wide and forming a subglobose head full of phialides bearing conidia. Phialides flask-shaped with a distinct neck, 5-8 x 2-3 μm; conidia catenulate, smooth-walled, hyaline, fusoid, mostly with pointed ends but sometimes rounded, 1-3 x 0.5-1 μm. Isolates on PDA are slow-growing, attaining a diam. of 5-10 mm in 1 mo at 22°C with white aerial mycelia. There was no sign of sporulation in culture after 1 mo. Akanthomyces aculeatus is known only from Khao Yai National Park, Nakhon Ratchasima. This is a very rare species with only solitary specimens being found.
